About Section 504

  • Venn Diagram depicting student services Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is an anti-discrimination statute that is designed to provide equal access to educational programs, services, and activities for students with a physical or mental health disability.

When a student has a physical or mental impairment that limits one or more major life activity, the school district is required to take steps for the student to prevent discrimination and provide the same access their peers have. Students who are progressing adequately without accommodations and/or modifications are still eligible for non-discrimination protections under Section 504 even though they do not have a 504 plan.

If you would like more information regarding 504 plans, please contact your child’s school counselor or student support specialist, or contact the District 504 Coordinator Anna Lloyd at 218‑327‑5705 or alloyd@isd318.org
