January 16, 2020: Southwest Kids are Supporting Students Across the Sea
Imagine trying to learn to read without any books! Imagine living in a place that doesn’t even have a bookstore! That is just what Mrs. Colleen Olson and her husband Greig saw when they traveled to the tiny island nation of St. Kitts in February of 2019. Mr. and Mrs. Olson volunteered at the Tucker Clarke Primary school, a school that has the same number of students as Southwest Elementary. They noticed that there were no books in the classroom. They had only blank notebooks and a chalkboard.
During the last two weeks of December, students and staff at Southwest Elementary School conducted a fundraiser to get books into the hands of the children of St.Kitts. In addition to boxes of new books, they were able to raise $700 to purchase books for the kids across the sea!
