GRHS Admitted to Lake Superior Conference
Admission allows 20 GRHS teams to compete at conference level

On October 7, the Lake Superior Conference welcomed Grand Rapids High School as a conference member. “The conference will offer more section opponents, more opportunities, and competitive play for our student athletes,” explained GRHS Activities Director Anne Campbell. “It also provides a better fit in enrollment numbers.

Teams competing in the conference include baseball, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls golf, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls Nordic ski, boys and girls hockey, volleyball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls track and field, girls swimming, and softball. The transition will not affect section tournaments.

GRHS teams already play against many of the conference schools, but now the games will be considered conference play. “GRG girl's hockey will move from ‘independent’ status to conference play for the first time in our history -- this aligns with our current scheduling of Twin Ports-area teams and allows our athletes to be recognized for post-season accolades, said Grand Rapids-Greenway Girls Hockey Coach Brad Hyduke. “This is a seamless ‘win-win’ for girls hockey in Grand Rapids and Greenway.”

Cloquet, Denfeld, Duluth Marshall, Hermantown, Proctor, and Superior all compete in the Lake Superior Conference. “The change will give our soccer team a consistent schedule without having to travel three hours or more for a competition,” said Boys Soccer Coach Nick Koerbitz.

The change will start with the 2020-2021 school sports season. Non-conference games will remain on the schedule.
