Asbestos Notification

ASBESTOS NOTIFICATION

In compliance with the federal Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), all primary and secondary schools nationwide are required to inspect for asbestos-containing materials and develop a comprehensive management plan. Independent School District #318 is fully committed to meeting and exceeding these requirements to maintain a safe and healthy environment for our students, staff, and community.

District Compliance

All buildings owned or leased by ISD #318—including portable and support buildings—have been thoroughly inspected by EPA-accredited inspectors. Material samples were analyzed by an independent laboratory. Based on these inspections, a state-approved Asbestos Management Plan was developed to ensure safe and responsible handling of asbestos materials in our facilities.

Ongoing Asbestos Management Activities

In the past year, ISD #318 continued to implement key aspects of the plan, including:

  • Biannual surveillance inspections conducted by the Institute for Environmental Assessment (IEA)

  • Triennial re-inspections as required by federal law

  • Immediate response to any areas where issues were identified during inspections

The district remains vigilant in promptly addressing all asbestos-related management needs.

Contractor Requirements

All short-term workers (e.g., electricians, telephone repair technicians, exterminators) must be informed of any asbestos-containing materials they may encounter. These individuals are required to contact the lead maintenance person before beginning work to receive this information.

Public Access to Information

ISD #318 maintains a detailed list of the location, type, and condition of asbestos-containing materials in each school building, along with a management and abatement schedule.
The Asbestos Management Plan is available for review in each school office. Copies can be provided upon request at a cost of $0.25 per page.
