Scholarship Descriptions

A.D.K. Scholarship (Alpha Delta Kappa) Sorority - Eta Chapter

Available to a young woman graduating from high school with a 3.0 or better GPA who plans to enter a teacher training program in an accredited college or university. When describing an individual or event that has had an impact on your life, describe a teacher or educational experience (past or present).

*Alan Seagren Memorial Scholarship

Alan Seagren was a local advocate for recreational safety programs including snowmobiles and ATVs. Alan's family and friends have established this scholarship in his memory. Applicants must be a high school graduate from Aitkin, Carlton, Itasca, Koochiching, or Western St. Louis County entering a 2 or 4- year program in criminal justice or law enforcement with the intent on becoming a Minnesota State Conservation Officer. Must attach a one page essay entitled, "My personal reflections on protecting our state's natural resources".

American Legion Auxiliary Good Girl Citizenship Scholarship

Available to a young woman who has demonstrated scholastic achievement and good citizenship, has taken part in extracurricular activities, and has financial need. Priority given to children or grandchildren of veterans.

Arvid and Anna Sandberg Music Scholarship

Two scholarships awarded to area-wide seniors studying music : In approximately 200 words, write an essay describing your short- and long-term goals . Include ways you've already begun pursuing these goals. If circumstances make attending college a hardship, please explain. List number of siblings at home and in college next year. Must provide proof of registration prior to payment of award and carry minimum of 12 credits. Include transcript and current courses, activities, financial need and two letters of recommendation from faculty.

Arvid and Anna Sandberg Scholarship

Two scholarships awarded to area-wide seniors studying math , including computer/engineering-related fields . In approxi- mately 200 words, write an essay describing your short- and long-term goals . Include ways you've already begun pursuing these goals. If circumstances make attending college a hardship, please explain. List number of siblings at home and in college next year. Must provide proof of registration prior to payment of award and carry minimum of 12 credits. Include transcript and current courses, activities, financial need and two letters of recommendation from faculty.

Bill Gray Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Bill Gray, long time principal at Southwest Elementary. Awarded to a graduating senior who attended

Southwest Elementary for at least 4 years and will be attending a 2- or 4- year college or technical school.

*Bill & Ruth Powers Education Scholarship

Available to a Grand Rapids or Bigfork senior with a B average or better who has enrolled in a 2- or 4- year college or technical school to pursue a major in the humanities or the arts. Attach an essay about why you have chosen to study in the arts or humanities field.

*Bob Frick Memorial Scholarship

Available to a male or female entering a vocational/technical program. Priority may be given to a graphic arts student.

Brink Family Memorial Scholarship

Two scholarships will be awarded to Grand Rapids High School Students who exemplify school and community involvement.

*Carl and Margaret Mickelson/Kiwanis Scholarship

The Carl and Margaret Mickelson/Kiwanis Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from GRHS who intends to further their post-secondary education, and who serves his/her high school and community above oneself. This scholarship is available to a student who demonstrates financial need, has a 3.0 GPA or better, is active in extracurricular activities, community and church. Key Club and/or community service is heavily weighed. Student must attach a record of service hours. Letters of recommendation and intent are helpful. Reference sheets available on-line at www.gracf.org.

Chapter ED PEO Scholarship

Awarded to a young woman in the top 10% of her class. It is based on academic ability, community and school

participation, and strength of character.

*Dan Retka Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to GRHS senior who is enrolled in a four-year university or college, studying engineering, construction management or environmental science. Student must have at least a 3.0 GPA or better. An essay is required . It should be titled, "What are my personal and career goals."

Darlene and Marvin Figgins Scholarship

A number of scholarships will be awarded to Grand Rapids High School students who have demonstrated a strong academic record and school/community involvement.

*Dede Emerson Scholarship

Awarded to a GRHS senior enrolled in a 2- or 4- year college pursuing a major in international business, veterinarian

work, or music. Strong consideration is given to merit and financial need. 3.0 GPA is required. Please include a brief statement on why you need this financial support for college. A letter of recommendation is appreciated. Copy of Transcript

and SAR needed. Reference sheets available on-line at www.gracf.org.

Deer Lake Association Scholarship

Available to a student who has been accepted at a college or technical school for a 2- or 4- year program. The scholarship will be given to a male or female who has a strong interest in environmental preservation, and plans to major in a field of conservation or environmental science.

District 318 Service Employees Association Scholarship

Available to a Grand Rapids High School or Bigfork High School graduating student enrolled in a community college, technical school and or a certificate of completion class program. Include a personal statement telling why you wish to be considered for this scholarship .

*Dr. John and Frances Furlong Scholarship

Awarded in honor of its donors, John and Frances Furlong of Menomonie, Wisconsin. Awarded to the highest ranking GRHS senior who is enrolled in a post-secondary technical training program. Technical or vocational training is defined as training which does not lead to a bachelor's degree.

*Ed & Eleanore Gregerson Scholarship

Awarded to a GRHS senior who is a member of the Zion Lutheran church in Grand Rapids, MN. Student must be accepted to a 2- or 4- year college or university (not a trade school). Students must attach an essay about how personal faith has made an impact on your life. An interview may be required. Scholarship is renewable.

Education Minnesota #1314 Scholarship

Awarded to the son or daughter of a member of EDMN Local #1314 who is planning to attend any 2- or 4- year college or a Vocational/Technical school. The recipient will be chosen by random drawing, however the application must be complete.

* Emil Stone Music Scholarship

Awarded to a student who plans to continue to study music (instrumental or vocal) at an accredited college or university. Must attach an essay on your plans, goals and values and how they relate to music and education.

*Erling & Fran Willadson Scholarship

Awarded to a GRHS senior who is enrolled or plans to enroll in a vocational or technical school program. Must attach an

additional one page essay on why you should receive this scholarship . The scholarship is for one year, but can be

reapplied for by the recipient.

*Fay Loveland Memorial Scholarship

Fay Loveland worked at Blandin Paper Company for 25 years. He and his wife Evelyn had three children, all of whom received

Blandin scholarships. Mr. Loveland passed away in 2006. The Loveland family would like to honor Mr. Loveland for his

commitment to education and his work ethic. Although none of the Loveland family continues to live in the area, they felt it was

appropriate to give back to their roots in Grand Rapids. Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Write a short essay on financial

need and include a copy of your SAR.

* Frances Bartos King - James E. King Scholarship

Available to female students of Itasca County planning on some form of post secondary education in any field of endeavor with the exception of any form of religious education, training or activities. The criteria for application include a record of academic achievement, potential for success and financial need. A copy of SAR is needed. You must also attach a copy of your high

school transcripts and a one page essay entitled: "How this scholarship will change my life".

*Freestone Community Club Scholarship

Available to one male and one female GRHS student. Priority given to students who live in the Arbo (56-25), Bass Lake (56-26), Deer Lake (57-26), or Wabana (57-25) townships. Include township on application. All applicants will be considered. Include three reference sheets found on-line at www.gracf.org.

* Glen Jones Vocational Ed Scholarship

Awarded in memory of Glen Jones by David and Rosalie Jones. Available to a GRHS student who enrolls in a secondary vocational education program. Eligible programs are business education, consumer homemaking and family living, agricultural business/forestry and all of the industrial/technology educational programs.

Grand Rapids American Legion Post 60 Scholarship

Available to a student who has been accepted at a college, technical college, or service academy located in the U. S. Include a minimum of 250-word essay on "What my country means to me."

Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce Scholarship

Applicant must have applied and been accepted to a 4 year college with plans to attain a B.S. or a B.A. degree. (In two pages or less, discuss the future needs of the Grand Rapids Area and how the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce can address those needs.) Applicant must be willing to participate in an interview selection process if requested.

Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce Vocational/Technical Scholarship

Applicants must be pursuing a two-year degree or certification in a vocational/technical industry needed locally. Provide a short summary on how your field of intended study can be used to contribute to the growth of this community. Applicants

must be willing to participate in an interview selection process if requested.

* Grand Rapids - Greenway Swimming Association Scholarship

Awarded to a graduating senior with a 2.5 minimum GPA who is actively participating in the swimming and /or diving team for at least three years at the varsity level. Athletic superiority or financial need shall not be the only determining factors in weighing eligibility. Team leadership, good sportsmanship, promoting team spirit, unselfishness and willingness to help others shall be considered. A one page essay is required on your future goals and why you should receive this scholarship. Copy of SAR needed.

Grand Rapids Centennial Rotary Scholarship

Awarded to area students. Applicants must write a one-page essay on "How you think youth could be more involved or contribute to the Rotary service organization?" One letter of recommendation is required. More information on Rotary values may be found in the counseling department and at www.Rotary.org .

Grand Itasca Foundation Health Care Scholarship

Available for up to four graduating seniors from Itasca County who enroll in the field of Health Care which may include, but not limited to the following: medical doctor, osteopathic physician, registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, dietician, laboratory technology, x-ray technology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, medical librarian, physician's assistant, or respiratory therapy. Include one letter of reference, a high school transcript, and a statement telling why you have chosen this profession. An interview may be required.

Grand Rapids Eagles Scholarships

Awarded to one girl and one boy from the Itasca County who have enrolled in a 2- year or 4- year college. Include an essay "What Equality Means to Me" with your application.

Grand Rapids Eagles Auxiliary Scholarship

Awarded to two Itasca County students who enroll in a 2- or 4- year college or university. A personal interview may be held with the top ten applicants as determined by the scholarship committee based on applications and attached references.

Grand Rapids Eagles Technical Scholarship

Available to a GRHS student who has enrolled in a post-secondary technical training program. Provide a short statement which addresses your characteristics of cooperation, initiative, judgment, leadership, personal qualities, and reliability.

GRHS Art Scholarship

Awarded to a student who has demonstrated excellence in the visual arts. Applicant must list art classes taken as a high school student (school classes, community class, or work pursued at home). You must submit a portfolio of five pieces of art work (2-D and or 3-D art work) that you created in high school. A portfolio review will be scheduled with the art teachers.

GRHS Business Student Scholarship

Awarded to a graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence in a variety of business courses. Applicants must provide a list of the business courses taken and they must be pursuing a business-related career. Applicants will be interviewed by the business department.

GRHS English Scholarship

The English Award is open to students graduating from GRHS who have exemplified outstanding accomplishments in Language Arts Grades 9-12. The student must be entering a field related to language arts.

GRHS Science Scholarship

Awarded to a graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence in a variety of Science classes. Applicants will be evaluated based on achievement, effort and course work as well as future educational plans.

GRHS Social Studies Scholarship

Awarded to the senior that demonstrates excellence in Social Studies through course work, community service involvement, good citizenship, and other academic related activities. Must be a student entering a field related to Social Sciences.

GRHS Technical Center Scholarship

Available to a GRHS senior who has enrolled in a post-secondary technical field. A technical field is defined as any program which further develops any of the areas of study offered at GRHS Technical Center.

Grand Rapids Lions Club/Cap Baker Scholarships

Awarded to one boy and one girl who have been active in the high school and have participated in at least two

activities. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or above and demonstrate peer acceptance and good citizenship. Students must

write a 250 word essay on the value of community service. An interview may be required.

Grand Rapids Veterans of Foreign Wars Scholarship

Awarded to a senior who has demonstrated academic achievement and school/community involvement. An essay on patriotism is required.

Grand Rapids Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Scholarship

Awarded to a female senior who has demonstrated academic achievement and school/community involvement.

Itasca Vintage Car Club Automotive Scholarships

Two scholarships available to area-wide graduating seniors pursuing an automotive- related career. Transcript of grades and 2 letters of recommendation are required. Please elaborate on why you have chosen this field of study on your application. Minimum 2.5 GPA required.

*Jennifer Koprowski Memorial Scholarship

Available to GRHS college-bound senior female swimmer who has shown leadership ability and dedication to the sport.

*Jerry & Cathie (Saxhaug) Anderson Scholarship

Jerry and Cathie (Saxhaug) Anderson, both graduates of Grand Rapids High School have established this scholarship as a part

of giving back to their school and community. Students who have earned a letter in sports or band or who have participated in

extracurricular activities will be given a high priority status in the selection criteria. Students must plan to attend a 2 or 4 year college

or university. Include verification of letter awards or other involvement.

*Jim Kosak Memorial Scholarship

Student must be a graduate of GRHS or Greenway and participated in their high school hockey or golf team. A one- page essay on parenthood or being a parent must be attached to the application along with a letter of reference.

*Keith Newstrom Memorial Aviation Scholarship

Scholarship for traditional and nontraditional students of the greater Grand Rapids area pursuing a career in aviation. Scholarship

to be used for aviation related education or flight hours. Students must attend an approved and accredited program. The

scholarship cannot be used for reimbursement. Applications for this scholarship are on-line at www.gracf.org

*Ken Mike Math Scholarship

Given in memory of Ken Mike, a World War II veteran who taught mathematics at GRHS for over 40 years and retired in 1980. Awarded to a graduating senior who intends to pursue a four-year degree in a math-related field. Applicants should display academic excellence, citizenship, and have an interest in math.

*Kirsten Fahlman Wagner Scholarship

Awarded to a female student from GRHS or Bigfork High School who is interested in writing or choral music.

Landecker and Associates, Inc. Scholarship

Awarded to a GRHS senior pursuing a degree related to civil engineering, surveying, planning, or an associated field. Awarded upon the successful completion (2.5 GPA or better) of your first semester or quarter at a post-secondary school (transcript to be sent to GRHS office).

*Myles Reif Memorial Scholarship

Available to GRHS seniors who are in the top 10% of their class and intend to enroll in a four-year or more degree program in any physical science field at any institution of higher learning. An interview is required.

Myron Roswold Memorial Scholarship

Students graduating from GRHS who intend to further their post-secondary education in a business related field at a private technical college, community college, or four year college are eligible.

*Northern Minnesota Builders' Association Scholarship

The purpose of the Northern Minnesota Builders' Association scholarship is to foster the building trade's future in Northern Minnesota by providing financial assistance for students pursuing a career in this field. You must be attending a Minnesota college or vocational school. If you or a parent are a NMBA member, please note on your application. Go to www.gracf.org or www.nmbuilders.com for more information.

Paul Bunyan Telephone Cooperative Scholarships

Two scholarships given to a male and female graduating senior who will be attending a university or technical college.

Reed Drug Scholarship

Awarded to a GRHS senior who enrolls in and is accepted at an accredited School of Pharmacy. Award based on financial need, scholastic achievement, and school and community involvement.

*Richard & Elaine T. Aune Music Scholarship

Awarded to a graduating senior from GRHS or Bigfork High School who plans to study music.

*Robert & Shirley Bennett Physics Scholarship

This scholarship is designed to support a student in Northern Minnesota who is a physics major. The student must be entering

a two or four year college or university. Attach an essay of choice.

Snets Welding and Fabrication Scholarship

Awarded to a student attending a technical school and who will be pursuing a career in welding and fabrication.

Star of the North Lions Club Scholarship

Awarded to a current resident of Itasca County who has enrolled full time (first or second year) at Itasca Community College.

Teamsters Local #346 Scholarship

Available to the son or daughter of a Teamsters local #346 member who enrolls in a technical training program.

WDIO/WIRT TV Scholarship

Awarded to a Grand Rapids High School senior attending a 2- or 4- year college pursuing a degree in communications, journalism, or broadcasting.
