Grand Rapids Community Education Receives Top 100 Host Award


Community Ed member poses with AARP driving instructorsFrom more than 18,000 organizations nationwide, AARP Driver Safety recognized Grand Rapids Community Education with the inaugural "Top 100 Host" Award for its outstanding support in 2013. Grand Rapids Community Education has supported AARP Driver Safety by collaborating with local volunteers to host its classroom-based driving refresher course, designed to help drivers age 50 and older stay safe and confident behind the wheel.

5K to Raise Funds for Itasca County Special Olympics Athletes


 
Special Olympics logoOver 50 Itasca County Special Olympics athletes will advance to State Summer Games with financial support from the 5K for Acceptance, a 5K run, walk, bike, or skate to benefit Special Olympics Minnesota–Itasca County. The 5K will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 7 in downtown Grand Rapids on the corner of 5th Street NE and 2nd Avenue NE in front of the Itasca County Courthouse.

Itasca Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) and Itasca Area Schools Collaborative (IASC) Community Education are partnering to offer specialized marketing training on utilizing Social Media for your business.
 
IEDC and IASC Community Education have received a grant from Blandin Foundation through their Blandin Broadband Communities Initiative to expand the use of the Internet by businesses in Itasca County. Art Unlimited, a marketing firm from Angora, MN, which specializes in Social Media Marketing, has been contracted to design and teach the specially developed workshops on Social Media Marketing utilizing Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Google Analytics, Blogging and Social Media Marketing Strategies.

The arts are flourishing in Grand Rapids and Bigfork Schools


student Fish art hangs in local businessWandering through the myriad of offerings during April’s First Friday Art Walk, visitors were treated to artwork reflecting 
the beauty of an adventure in the North Woods. These fantastic animal creations were not the work of professional artists, but were created by 4th grade students at Southwest Elementary. Joined by Susan Hawkinson, author of Tina Christina Sestina: A Northwoods Adventure, which was nominated for a 2014 Minnesota Book Award, the students displayed illustrations of animals who call the area home.

School Board Meeting Highlights


Students in the Gifted and Talented ProgramThe April 23rd School Board meeting was held in the TelePresence room at Bigfork, and through this technology also made available at the Grand Rapids High School TelePresence.

There were a number of indicator reports that spoke well of our achievements in the District, including College in the Schools, International Baccalaureate, and the Gifted and Talented Program.

The Children's Fair is coming April 26th


Children of all ages along with parents, grandparents, or caregivers are invited to attend the 16th Annual Children’s High up view of crowds at children's fairFair on Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 9am to 1pm at the IRA Civic Center.

Children’s Fair gives families a free, fun-filled way to explore the services and businesses in the county. Brought to you by Children First!, the fair allows agencies, service organizations, clinics and businesses a chance to connect with families in the Itasca Area. The goal of the fair is to educate and increase awareness of available services.

School Board Meeting Highlights



Dr. Thomas welcomes student science fair repThe April 7th School Board meeting had a number of student visitors in attendance. There were student board representatives from both the middle school and Grand Rapids High School. The middle school update included a reminder that the DARE graduation is today, April 15th, the 8th grade dance will be coming up at the end of the month, and an update that middle school construction is progressing. There are a number of events coming up at Grand Rapids High School too, including the Arbor Day tree planting, the Color Me Quick 5K hosted by the GRHS Student Council, and the Job Fair for students interested in a summer job.
