ISD 318 Curriculum
What we are about:
Curriculum is the “what” of teaching
and instruction is the “how”. Curriculum was once thought of as a scope
and sequence from a textbook or a map of activities. Today, curriculum
goes far beyond this and we are expanding its use as a management system
to promote continuous improvement of programming and teaching
techniques. We align programs to the Minnesota Academic State
Standards. Those standards can be accessed through the Minnesota
Department of Education link on this site.
District 318 curriculum is in a 6
year cycle. During each of those years, there are very specific tasks
to complete so teachers can make decisions about program needs, as well
as what they may want to pursue professionally to enhance their
delivery. During Years 1-3 teachers research & analyze data, develop &
refine curriculum, and implement new programming. Years 4-6, teachers
monitor and adjust.
Education is in a continual state of
development, and it requires creative and flexible thinkers who open
themselves, willingly, to the constantly changing approaches evident in
good teaching . In 2008, District 318 will establish a District
Curriculum Council, whose job it will be to set district curriculum
goals and then communicate those goals to their respective site
council. This over-arching committee will be made up of principals from
each building, teachers from each building, and the Director of
Curriculum and Instruction. This committee will serve as the impetus
for curricular communication among all buildings and grade levels,
giving all a clearer picture of the “why’s and how’s” of programming and
delivery at various levels.
State assessments are given each
spring in the areas of reading, writing, math, and science. We have now
posted the test specifications for these assessments on our website.
